MagicJack Product Review - Is Dan Borislow trying to kill telecom?

On the wee hours of the morning I saw a commercial about MagicJack, a softphone / USB device that 'allegedly' allows you to make unlimited calls to the U.S. from any Internet connected computer in the world for $19.95/year. I was intrigued.

A few Google searches later, many people have reported that it does work overseas. Since I tend to travel often, I'm now officially going to try this out. I would have loved to test this while I was on Holland America's cruise ships (which blocks Skype). But I didn't know about it! Definitely a case study for infomercial marketing.

OUTLINE:
  • 01/06/2008: I just ordered it off their web site at www.magicjack.com. Shipping for priority mail costs $13.90. They are already making a profit off me on shipping alone! Mr. Borislow, work on this -- this does not make a first good impression. Build it into the price rather than jacking the shipping.

    More updates later...

  • 01/03/2009: First I appreciate everyone's opinion on MagicJack. I seem to have attracted a lot of lovers and haters of this product.

After almost a full year's worth of use from Tokyo to Manila to all parts of the world, here are my final comments:

    1. It has saved me a lot of money. I have attended conference calls and calls to friends and family through MagicJack and having the capability to do that without much cost has been great. At one point I was in one of Tokyo's airport lounge using a cheap old telephone hooked up to my computer...and everyone just gave that strange look. I could imagine them asking, "Is he really talking on the phone or is he nuts?"

    2. From a rating standpoint, from 1 to 10, I would give it a passing 8. The extension cable broke the first month, plus there were some annoying upgrades and outages that seemed to span hours and I had to use Skype. About 1 out of 10 calls seem choppy while my Internet connection/CPU usage is fine. But overall, I am relatively happy with my MagicJack because I use it a lot and will be definitely renewing it for another year.

What's surprised me though is that the popularity of MagicJack seemed to have boomed, with more and more people talking about it as the year passed. I heard it from a guy traveling with me to Manila. In the past, when I mentioned it in passing, they would simply say..MAGIC WHA? This is good news for me, I hope that means the company is healthy and they will continue to save me money.

P.S. Thanks for fixing your shipping charge. I now see it dropped to $6.95.

How is the Magic Jack working for you? I just purchased mine and I'm anxious to receive it.

Good luck with your magicjack. It didn't work right for me. When I complained enough to their online customer service reps, they told me they would replace it at no charge and the next day they took another 39.95 out of my bank account. So I basically get to pay 80.00 for 1 magicjack that didn't work and another that may not work.

I have had mine for a week and it works great

I ordered a MagicJack this morning and called back this afternoon to cancel after reading their terms of use - a little document that is very hard to find on their Web site. As a matter of fact, access to the terms of use seems to be non-existent until just after you have placed an order, where you are granted a window of opportunity to click on a link and read what they really don't want you to read.

There is good reason friendly Dan wants to hide this information.

First of all, (sorry I cannot give an exact quote, since the terms of use is out of reach of the normal Web site visitor) after stating that incoming long distance calls are free to anyone who is calling you through a Magic Jack (they're SUPPOSED to be free, aren't they - why is this being stated this way), section 4, I believe, then states something like "Your outgoing long-distance calls are also free when you are calling another party with a Magic Jack connection, and you can also make other long-distance calls."

I can assume this is just poor wording. But this is a legal document, and I don't want to assume anything. Besides that, if this were my company, you would not find anything so poorly worded. You can take that to the bank and draw interest on it!

Then - the clincher - I find out that anyone who calls me will be subject to ADVERTISING!!

    No! No! No!

And THIS IS NOT AN OPTION - the terms of use states so. There is no alternative to pay more for the service and forgo the advertising and there is no way in hell I want people calling me (who are mainly clients, by the way - I work from home)to be subjected to advertising on the phone line. Yuk!

My opinion of this company: sleezy and unprofessional. I expect their product to be the same way. Nice try, Dan.

one article claiming that Magic Jack hides information in their terms and conditions caught my attention, but "RATIONAL RABBIT" WHO made the comment, did not make any sense at all in his comment. He goes on to complain and complain about Magic Jack but fails to tell any of us any specific reason why he "HATES IT"

I just ordered one and also paid IN ADVANCE for 5 additional years of phone service. Meaning I spent $39 + $59, I HOPE I didn't jump the gun and order this too quickly without researching it more, but there really is no where to research it, except to try it. I am hoping that IF It does not work the way I want it to then I will get a FULL REFUND back from them, IF THEY DON"T ISSUE IT, I will dispute the charge with my credit card company who is VERY VERY good at handling disputes with disreputable companies.

It’s nice to see some common sense users of this product for a change. The only issue with this device is IGNORANCE. After reading hundreds of “I love it”, “I hate it” posts, I’ve come to a few conclusions.

1: Never buy ANY free 30day trial on ANYTHING!!! Get MJ from QVC, Circuit City, Amazon etc... Then you have a hassle free return. ALL 30 DAY FREE TRIAL AND GIVE US YOU’RE CREDIT CARD NUMBER Company’s will set on your money and give you the runaround, duh. Your and every other sucker’s money is letting them make interest off it. They ALL will bite you in the azz with the fine print. DON'T DO IT!

2: For the people that think the thing that comes out after you press the button on the front of the computer is an automated cup holder, you’re too stupid to use this product. You probably have trouble operating a light switch or flushing the toilet. If you are a 1 on the (1 - 10) Tech Savvy Scale, save us the drudge of reading your negative post and don't even think about getting this product. It's way, way, way over your head. Go play with the light switch or something. MJ is a startup company running on a shoestring. It’s $40 dollars! It’s $40 dollars! It’s $40 dollars! It’s $40 dollars! It’s $40 dollars! What do you expect them to do, send a tech to your house? Come on people get real. If you can’t make it work then return it to Circuit City or QVC etc… Oh, you did the 30day free trial thing? DUH… you deserve the hassle. Just don’t bore us with your post.

3: Paranoid people get up in the morning; check the weather etc… on Internet. Hello! Your ISP tracked what you did and the Weather web cookie and all the other cookies did they’re thing. Picked up your Cell phone and made a call, Hello! Your phone service tracked and logged your call, they also knew you were home because of the built in tracking system. Got in your car and stopped at intersection, got your picture taken by traffic cam. Somebody knows where you were at the time of day. Stopped to get gas, restaurant, shopping swiped your credit card, God only knows how many people got this information on what you bought. Went to work and your employer tracked every keystroke, oh and don’t forget to smile for the candid camera. I looked your name up in the White pages and Goggled Earth your address, WOW! You got a really nice house dude. Maybe I’ll pay you a visit and spy on you. You think MJ gives a rip about the above information? They just want to know local information so they can push you the latest add special from the local pizza place. Unless you live in a cave, get a life because this is your life, you’re just too ignorant to recognize it and all the bitching in the world is not going to change it. Install this on an old PC, stick in the closet, plug in a wireless phone and forget about it. Now it’s out of site and out of mind. Just like all the above listed things we ignore every day.

4: It’s amazing! Carp computer + slow line + Magic Jack = Magic Jacks fault. You got to love it.
This is a COMPUTER \ INTERNET device. If you have a slow piece of crap computer loaded with God knows what (because you don’t patch, virus protect and properly maintain your PC.) your going to have PROBLEMS! If your Internet speed is slooooooow, guess what? It’s NOT GOING TO WORK WELL! So the folks that post, “I can’t hear”, “it’s full of static”, “it echoes”, “it sucks”, don’t buy it” and on and on and on. It’s your fault, not Magic Jack. If it wasn’t YOUR fault, we’d ALL be experiencing the same problems you are. So if you’re not willing to deal with YOUR problem, or simply ask people that have it working a few questions to help resolve your problem, then stop posting your ignorance.

5: This DOSE NOT and SHOULD NOT replace you’re your phone system. Analyze what it can and cannot do for you. If it makes business sense then get it. If not, DON’T slam this product because it doesn’t meet your needs. This device saves me and millions of people like me lots of money.

    6: Read 1 – 5.

    Rational Rabbit said...

Don't get it there Christopher? I'll explain it REAL simple for you.

    1. I don't trust any company that virtually hides their Terms of Use.

    2. The sentence, "Your outgoing long-distance calls are also free when you are calling another party with a Magic Jack connection, and you can also make other long-distance calls": "free when you are calling another party with a Magic Jack Connection" states that your calls are free when calling another party with a Magic Jack connection. It does not say anything about calling another party who DOES NOT have a Magic Jack connection, except for the statement "you can also make other long distance calls", which does not state that those other calls are free.

    3. I don't want people who call me to be subjected to advertising. I don't know how I can make that statement simpler for you.

    4. Not stated in my first post, but related to # 1 above and generally, poor business practices, receiving a refund shortly after placing my order turned out to be a major hassle, taking over two hours on the phone, and then waiting for days for it to happen.

I was hoping to receive some statements from users on #'s 2 and 3 above, who would be a lot better able to comment. For the reasons I stated, I simply chose not to deal with the company. What really ticked me off is that I was not able to view this information until AFTER I had made a purchase, and never again once I left that page. Had they been up-front, I just would not have purchased it in the first place.

The below is an example of my 20 contacts with Dan Borislow's crappy company YMAX, the company with no address or phone number (out of his garage). The state of FL should close the garage door and take out the trash. His infomercial with his kid is both obnoxious and arrogant. What a surprise.

After dealing with Vonage customer service the Magic Jack is a blessing. Come on people stop complaining. Vonage is so nice when you buy their product but as soon as you need help they are RUDE!!!!!!! Any help I have needed with Magic Jack I have gotten. Every company has it's flaws but to complain about hidden terms of use come on what company doesn't have them. Magic Jack is inexpensive and convenient.I praise Mr. Borislow for his invention.

I bought mine at Best Buy and it works great on a Vista 64 laptop from HP. I'm using a wireless network with ATT DSL at it's slowest speed. The service is $19.99 a month for DSL. My wife did a 2 hours tele training for work by the pool and had no problem! She now will not give it back to me so I'm going to buy another because I like how it sends an email to you when you have a message. I can't wait to port my old number to it. It's great, I wish I thought of it.

I just got off the phone dealing with Magic Jack and I think they should be put behind bars. It baffles me hy a company with a product with such potential would be so deceptive in their advertising (they say it will work on my Mac but it works only on selected Macs)and then be unwilling to refund my money and let me and everyone else who they have been out of integrity with spread the bad news about them...when will the sleazeballs learn that a little integrity will keep them in business longer?

I currently have the window to initiate a chat with the magic tech help.

    Guess what!?
It claims I did not include my name in the blank provided, I've put my name in the blank seven different ways to Sunday.

When this thing works, it's great. Currently though when I call someone their phone rings but there is no audio in either direction. I haven't been able to check to see if my caller ID is being transmitted. If it is there is someone who is a little miffed at me personally.
I don't know if my problem is here or at their server as they do not have a status page to inform their customers what the hell is going on.
In an attempt to get the phone working I have even shut down all firewalls and antivirus software. No luck.

45 minutes now and still live chat refuses to connect even though all blanks are properly filled out.

I hope these folks can get it together and upgrade their website for users, as it currently is only for PR, they could probably cut their tech support expenses by providing system status page from the menu on the phone. Then they would not need to turn off their tech support.

i decieded to order a magicjack so got on line and filled out form for free trial. it would take me as far as filling our for and giving credit card number, then a "this page has expired would come up.
i asked for and got an on line chat with jade
after explaining to jade my problem she spent 30min.
telling me what to do which i did and then she tells me to plug in my magicjack !!!!
after explaining that i did not have a magicjack but that the reason for my call was to order one. she gave me a phone number to call to order it.
i called the number and ordered the magic jack.
the next morning i get an e-mail saying that my order has been canceled because due to the large volumn of calls they are only accepting orders from people that have not ordered a magicjack before. (i have not ordered before)
so i give up if its this hard to order then i shudder to thinkwhat the product or other service is like. thanks anyway

    Hello Mr Borislow
I am a proud user of your magicjack
I was given one as a gift about 18 months ago, which I used for a year... after expiration, I could not afford to renew it.
On the 24-07-2010, I was now able to renew it, but when I tried it did not accept my MasterCard to renew... but it was no fault of the bank, I called my bank and they assured me that they were approving the payment.. but for some reason your site was not accepting it.. every night after Saturday I've been having live chats with people at magicjack.com to get my magicjack renewed, but without any success. They just keep promising me that I would get an email from them to solve my problem... but today is Saturday 31-07-2010..... and I have not received that email as yet ... steve: hello

    Michaela: Hi Steve.

steve: I am getting this message--"your outbound calling has been suspended for excessive usage".

Michaela: As I have checked it here, This phone number has violated our Terms of Service. Please refer to Section 6, Proper Use at www.magicJack.com/TOS

    steve: wait...what specifically?

Michaela: Under 6. Proper Use it says "If magicJack sees excessive use, including but not limited to, a customer whose usage is twenty (20) times more than the average magicJack's customer's usage, or a customer who calls more than 50 different telephone numbers per day, or systematic or intentional misuse, it reserves the right, in our sole discretion, to terminate your use of the magicJack device and/or Software immediately, and you will not be entitled to get a refund of any licensing fee or any other fee you may have paid to us. We reserve the right to reclaim any telephone number that does not make a call for a consecutive 90 days. In the event we reclaim a phone number and your software license is still active, you may choose another phone number."
steve: so im not able to dial more than 50 #'s in a day?

steve: so does that mean i can no longer use this service, or what do i do from here?

Michaela: I fully understand how you feel. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do for it as these this kind of process is system generated. Once our Terms of Service are violated your magicJack will automatically be suspended. There is nothing you can do to reverse the action either.

steve: michaela....i am sooooo totally confused. I use this for work so to say i cant use it to dial more than 50 numbers in a day is strange. I have to make $.

Michaela: You can't use the device for outbound calls
Steve and there is nothing you can do to reverse the action.

Michaela: Free calls are what we offer for our customers. It does not say "Unlimited".

Michaela: I understand Steve but please understand too that we are just following their policies.

We purchased a Magic Jack about a year ago and were satisfied with it. However, the piece that fits into the usb broke. I contacted them thru chat. I wanted a replacement and we paid the $20 and it has cleared the bank. However, the Magic Jack seemed to land in Michigan and said there was no such address there. I contacted them again thru chat. They said they would send another one to us and I verified the address. We have the tracking number and now it seems to be in Florida. I am so disgusted. Also, we paid $69 for another 5 year service and we better not lose this money or someone is going to be sued. People take it from there!!!

    Dear Mr. Borislow:

I purchased your MagicJack several months ago. It has been working fine but last week, when dialing local numbers in my area code, I received a recorded message that the number(s) was disconnected. I have been communicating with your customer service with no correction of this problem.

I am taking care of an elderly parent so outgoing phones calls are a necessity, especially to the drugstore, doctor, and special services.

The following is a copy of the texting between your customer service and myself.

    Respectfully,

    Steve Mason

At time it works most of the time it locks up my system. The 'live chat' is a joke, when I asked for the address to write for a refund on my 5 year plan I was blown off. The web site has no refund area although it is claimed to be there. I am mad as heck and filing a BBB complaint and anywhere else I can, this isn't right they take your money but the product isn't working correctly and they are gone...

My MJ worked okay...a few minor issues in the beginning, but for the price I couldnt complain too much.
Now, it seems a couple of numbers I have dialed will no longer work. I get a telco intercept instead of a ring tone. I have contacted magic jack customer service every week for over a month, and according to them, the engineers have yet to look at this issue.

I have absolutely no faith that the problem will ever be addressed, but I am looking into filing complaints with the FCC and any other government agencies.

I live in Saskatchewan, and I recieve three phone calls a day from this weird Sanfransisco number. 1-415-685-8701 When they call, I answer the phone and the line is silent until an automated voice says "goodbye". The reason Im posting this here, is because I got so fed up with the calls I called back. The number has an answering machine which is even more infuriating, so I googled the number. It comes up as YMAX Communications phone number in San Fransisco which is the Magic Jack company I guess. There is no way to contact this company except for Air mail! I am sharing this information because this company has been harassing me and my family for years. I have no way of asking them to stop because they dont have a number to call back this is abuse!! If I were anyone considering using the Magic Jack just google Dan Borislow and do some reading. This guy is the lowest of the low when it comes to tele marketing

I have been trying for their tech support to help me for the past two days and it has been impossible. For some reason y mispelled my email address and in order for the systrm to work has to be validated, unfortunatedly the password (recovery) is being sent to the wrong address... Apparently it takes days and engineering department for them to simply register the correct email..... I will have to wait or buy a new sistem.
