Skillet Hero Lyrics and Fan Video

For those looking for the music video, this is not the one. But if you are looking for a good remake, this would be it.

Hero by Skillet
Lyrics // Songwriters: Cooper, John Landrum

I'm just a step away
I'm just a breath away
Losing my faith today
Falling off the edge today

I am just a man
Not superhuman
I'm not superhuman
Someone save me from the hate

It's just another war
Just another family torn
Falling from my faith today
Just a step from the edge
Just another day in the world we live

I need a hero to save me now
I need a hero, save me now
I need a hero to save my life
A hero will save me just in time

I've gotta fight today
To live another day
Speaking my mind today
My voice will be heard today

I've gotta make a stand
But I am just a man
I'm not superhuman
My voice will be heard today

It's just another war
Just another family torn
My voice will be heard today
It's just another kill
The countdown begins to destroy ourselves

I need a hero to save me now
I need a hero, save me now
I need a hero to save my life
A hero will save me just in time

I need a hero to save my life
I need a hero, just in time
Save me just in time
Save me just in time

Who's gonna fight for what's right?
Who's gonna help us survive?
We're in the fight of our lives
And we're not ready to die

Who's gonna fight for the weak?
Who's gonna make 'em believe?
I've got a hero, I've got a hero
Living in me

I'm gonna fight for what's right
Today I'm speaking my mind
And if it kills me tonight
I will be ready to die

A hero's not afraid to give his life
A hero's gonna save me just in time

I need a hero to save me now
I need a hero, save me now
I need a hero to save my life
A hero will save me just in time

(I need a hero)
Who's gonna fight for what's right?
Who's gonna help us survive?

(I need a hero)
Who's gonna fight for the weak?
Who's gonna make 'em believe?
I've got a hero

I need a hero
A hero's gonna save me just in time

Reflection - dc Talk's In the Light (1996)

Jesus Freak: In the Light (1996)
I was cleaning out one of my old offices and found an old CD: dc Talk's Jesus Freak album. Funny how you find things when your not looking for them.

One of my favorite songs is in this album. It's called In the Light and the song brings back some good old lessons that I think is worth sharing. I especially found this particular verse very instructing...

The disease of self runs through my blood
It's a cancer fatal to my soul
Every attempt on my behalf has failed
To bring this sickness under control

dc Talk when they made this song, wanted to express their desire "to be walking in the light of our Lord Jesus". The song everytime I heard it on the radio or in a CD player, kept me in check, that despite all of what I have learned on this earth, I'm still lost without God and anytime I'm bent on using my own understanding, especially with my ego, I tend to make mistakes.

Historical context, analogy, and practical application
The analogy of being "in the light" comes from biblical texts like John 8:12, John 12:35-36,46. In these conversations, roughly 2,000 years ago, Christ said to His disciples that He is the "light of the world" to help everyone lost in the "darkness". He also stated those in darkness were ignorant of where they were going.

Those that heard Christ lived in an era with no electricity and street lights. They clearly understood this illustration. They also understood the concept since a thousand years prior to Christ, King David wrote about God's teachings being a guide in their lives. David wrote in Psalms 119:105 that "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path".

This song always reminded me to look back into biblical truths and principles. For one thing, to actually open the Bible and read what those truths are. :-)

VERSE 1:
I keep trying to find a life
On my own, apart from You
I am the king of excuses
I've got one for every selfish thing I do

Tell me...
What's going on inside of me?
I despise my own behaviour
This only, serves to confirm my suspicions
That I'm still a man in need of a Saviour

CHORUS:
I wanna be in the Light
As You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars in the heavens
Oh, Lord be my Light and be my salvation
Cause all I want is to be in the Light
All I want is to be in the Light

VERSE 2:
The disease of self runs through my blood
It's a cancer fatal to my soul
Every attempt on my behalf has failed
To bring this sickness under control

Tell me...
What's going on inside of me?
I despise my own behaviour
This only serves to confirm my suspicions
That I'm still a man in need of a Saviour

CHORUS:
I wanna be in the Light
As You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars in the heavens
Oh, Lord be my Light and be my salvation
Cause all I want is to be in the Light
All I want is to be in the Light

BRIDGE:
Honesty becomes me
[There's nothing left to lose]
The secrets that did run me
[In Your presence are defused]
Pride has no position
[And riches have no worth]
The fame that once did cover me
[Has been sentenced to this Earth]
Has been sentenced to this Earth

Tell me, what's going on inside of me?
I despise my own behaviour
This only serves to confirm my suspicions
That I'm still a man in need of a Saviour

CHORUS:
I wanna be in the Light
As You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars in the heavens
Oh, Lord be my Light and be my salvation
Cause all I want is to be in the Light
All I want is to be in the Light

I wanna be in the Light
As You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars in the heavens
Oh, Lord be my Light and be my salvation
Cause all I want is to be in the Light
All I want is to be in the Light

About dc Talk
dc Talk is a four time Grammy Award winning Christian music group. The group formed around 1988, consisting of Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max Smith. They have released five major studio albums together: DC Talk (1989), Nu Thang (1990), Free at Last (1992), Jesus Freak (1995), and Supernatural (1998).

I saw them a few years back on a WAY-FM music tour in Fort Myers, FL. They are probably one of my all time favorite music groups because of:

1. Their music and meaningful lyrics.
2. Their ability to win secular industry awards (Grammys) that helped highlight the strength and creativity of Christian contemporary artists.
3. Their achievements brought record companies to further study and invest in the Christian music industry.
